Terms of Service

Last updated 2026-10-17

1. Who this is between

These terms are between you and Lint & Ledger Ltd., which operates Bench Eleven: bencheleven.com and the Bench Eleven apps for iPhone, Android and the web. Using any of them means you accept them.

Send legal notices to support@bencheleven.com.

2. Your account, and how you sign in

There is no password. You sign in by asking for a link and opening it from your email, so whoever can read your email can sign in as you. Keep that address secure; tell us at support@bencheleven.com if it is out of your control.

A sign-in link works once and expires quickly. We record that a link was sent and whether it bounced or was marked as spam, which is what makes "my link never came" answerable. Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) logs each request, including your IP address and approximate location, for 7 days so we can trace errors. We do not store your IP address anywhere else.

You may change the address on your account at any time. We send a confirmation to the new address, and the change takes effect only when you open it.

Product news — news about Bench Eleven, a few times a year — is emailed only to people who ask for it, in the app or on our website. Every one has a link to stop it. Changing your address moves the subscription with it; closing your account ends it.

3. Clubs, and who can see what about you

A club is run by its owner and the people it gives a role: administrators, managers, and the people who build lineups or enter crews. Anyone with a role in your club can see your name, paddling side, weight, and whether you have told them you are a paradragon paddler or a breast cancer survivor. Your email address is seen by the people who manage the club's members; a team manager sees it only for the squads they manage. Your phone number and emergency contact are not shown to anyone in your club. Other members of your club see much less: your name, photo, sides and gender. They do not see your weight, your emergency contact, your date of birth or either health flag.

The other facts a race division can require, such as para classification, or a transplant or cancer history, are seen only by people with a role too. Your club's managers can also record the gender category you race in; you don't see it in the app, and you can ask for it.

Your club's managers can write a manager note about your membership. Every manager in the club can read it and change it, not only the manager of a squad you paddle in. It is not shown to you in the app unless you are a manager yourself — a manager sees every note in their club, including the one written about them. Either way it is your personal data: write to support and we will disclose it, with anything about a third party removed. A note is deleted twelve months after the last time a manager edited it, whether or not you are still a member of that club.

A manager can also create a place for somebody who has no account — a junior paddler, a guest from another club — and record a contact for them. If that is you or your child, the club is who to ask about it.

A note you add to your Yes/No/Maybe is seen only by the people who build your club's lineups. It can say something about your health, so it is deleted when you close your account.

Managers can export a crew's names, emails and birth dates to enter it in a festival. For a paddler without an account, the email is the contact the club recorded. A club's owner, administrators and member managers can also export its member list, with the details managers see, its practice answers and its lineups.

A club's owner can hand a paid club to another member; your details stay with the club. A free club can't be handed over.

Lineups, availability and race crews belong to the club, not to you personally. A lineup you have been part of stays in the club's history even after you leave or close your account, with your name.

4. Paying for a club

You can buy a plan on bencheleven.com, where Stripe takes the card, or on iPhone through the App Store. We never see your card.

Every owner gets one club free, for up to ten members, and it does not expire. Clubs of more than ten, or clubs that want more, need the Club or Pro plan.

Your first club gets 14 days of Club, once per account, with no card, if you start it without a plan. When a trial or plan ends, a club of ten or fewer moves to Free if you don't already have a free club; otherwise it is locked to its members, with everything kept, for a year.

A subscription belongs to the person who bought it rather than to a particular club, so it can be moved between clubs they own.

Cancelling stops renewal at the end of the period you've paid for; we don't refund part-periods. Plans bought on iPhone are refunded only by Apple. A refund for a change to these terms is in 8.4.

If a subscription ends, the club and everything in it is kept for a year so a season can be skipped and picked up again. During that time the club is read-only and its members cannot reach it; only its owner can. After the year it is deleted like any other club.

5. Reporting, and what we will do about it

If a member's name or profile photo should not be there, or someone is behaving abusively, report their profile from the app or email support@bencheleven.com. We review content reports within 24 hours. That commitment covers objectionable content and abusive behaviour, not general support or billing, which are answered as soon as a person can get to them.

We may remove content, or remove someone from the service, for behaviour that makes it unsafe or unusable for other people.

There is no blocking between members, deliberately: your club's managers decide who is in the club and who sits where, so blocking somebody would not change what you can see or where you paddle. Tell the club, or tell us.

6. Ending it

You can close your account at any time — from You › Your details in the app, or at bencheleven.com/legal/delete-account, which emails you a link first so that only you can do it. Your email address, phone number, photo, bio, links, emergency contact, date of birth and the notes beside your answers are removed immediately.

Closing your account also closes any club you own, and its subscription stops at the end of the period you paid for, unless you hand a paid club over first. A plan bought on iPhone is Apple's to stop, in your iPhone's Settings. You can't close your account while an offer to hand over a club is open.

Three things survive, and you should know before you file: your paddling details — name, gender, weight, paddling side, birth year, any paradragon or breast cancer survivor flag, the other race-division facts above and the competition gender a manager recorded — are kept by the clubs you paddled for and shown on no list or export, a lineup you paddled in keeps the seat, with your name, and a report you filed about somebody else is kept for twelve months reduced to an account identifier.

Some records also outlive the account for a set time: sign-in records for 90 days, the notifications we sent you for 12 months, a record of the emails we sent you, with your address, for 30 days, the record of what our staff did for 2 years, and a manager's note until it expires. Your past Yes/No/Maybe answers stay with the club, without their notes. Everything else goes.

We keep a record that a deletion was asked for, with the address it was asked for, for 90 days — including after the account is gone, because it is the only way we can show you how your request was handled.

7. Age

Bench Eleven is not for people under 13, and you must be 13 or older to have an account. A younger paddler is added to a club by an administrator as a place in a lineup: no account, no sign-in, and nothing is sent to them. Their contact details, where a club records them, belong to the club and are visible to that club's managers.

8. The usual

8.1 No promises about the service

We work hard to keep Bench Eleven running and correct, but we provide it as it is and as it is available. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, express or implied — including that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for a particular purpose.

Bench Eleven is a planning tool, not a safety system. A lineup, a balance reading or a seat suggestion is an aid to the people running a practice or a race. Whether a boat goes out, who is in it and whether it is safe are decisions for your club, your coach and your steersperson — never for the app.

8.2 The limit of what we owe you

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data or lost goodwill.

For everything else, our total liability to you for all claims is limited to the greater of CA$50 or what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose.

Nothing in these terms takes away a right the law where you live says cannot be taken away. Some places — Quebec and the European Union among them — do not allow some of these limits for consumers, and where that is so, they do not apply to you.

8.3 Which law, and which courts

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes go to the courts of Alberta, and you and we both accept their jurisdiction — unless the consumer law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim at home, in which case you keep it.

We do not require arbitration.

8.4 When these terms change

We will change these terms from time to time. The date at the top always says when they last changed, and earlier versions are available on request.

If a change matters — anything about what you pay, how a subscription renews, what we do with your data, or your rights under these terms — we will email the address on your account at least 60 days before it takes effect, saying what is changing and when. If you do not accept it you may cancel before that date at no cost. For a plan bought on bencheleven.com, if you write to us before the change takes effect, we'll refund the unused part of the period, by the day. Plans bought on iPhone are refunded only by Apple. Continuing to use Bench Eleven after the date means you accept the change.

Small changes — fixing a typo, naming a new feature, clarifying without changing what anyone owes anyone — take effect when posted.
